Diane Arbus redefined the concerns and the range of the art she practiced. Her bold subject matter and photographic approach have established her preeminence in the world of the visual arts. Her gift for rendering strange those things we consider most familiar, and uncovering the familiar within the exotic, enlarges our understanding of ourselves. Diane Arbus Revelations affords the first opportunity to explore the origins, scope, and aspirations of what is a wholly original force in photography. Arbus’s frank treatment of her subjects and her faith in the intrinsic power of the medium have produced a body of work that is often shocking in its purity, in its steadfast celebration of things as they are. Presenting many of her lesser-known or previously unpublished photographs in the context of the iconic images reveals a subtle yet persistent view of the world. The book reproduces two hundred full-page duotones of Diane Arbus photographs spanning her entire career, many of them never before seen. It also includes an essay, “The Question of Belief,” by Sandra S. Phillips, senior curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and “In the Darkroom,” a discussion of Arbus’s printing techniques by Neil Selkirk, the only person authorized to print her photographs since her death. A 104-page Chronology by Elisabeth Sussman, guest curator of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art show, and Doon Arbus, the artist’s eldest daughter, illustrated by more than three hundred additional images and composed mainly of previously unpublished excerpts from the artist’s letters, notebooks, and other writings, amounts to a kind of autobiography. An Afterword by Doon Arbus precedes biographical entries on the photographer’s friends and colleagues by Jeff L. Rosenheim, associate curator of photographs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. These texts help illuminate the meaning of Diane Arbus’s controversial and astonishing vision.

This book was worth the investment! At B&N they were selling it for $110, but here saved me a $40-50 bucks! Ton's of photos of what Diane Arbus has done through out the years as a photographer. She's one of the best and a master in photography. This book contains detail information of her process, chronological bio that leads up to her death and the whole 9-yards and beyond! Definitely worth the purchase if there are any availability/stocked.
This was one of the greatest photography retrospectives and the book pretty much summarizes as well as delves deeply into the issues covered by the show. If you missed the exhibition, this book is a good substitute. If you want to know about what you saw in the show, this is an indispensable guide. Highest quality reproductions, even in the paperback.
Great + great book! Very good quality with full of information and great imprints
I own two Arbus monographs and have lived with them for over 20 years. Many of those works are reproduced in this volume. There is a lot of talk about "the human condition" and I suppose all artists in one way or another wrestle with the notion. Arbus has always meant to me someone who seemed to reveal who we are beneath the fashion, the roles, the sex, the culture. I used one of her images as a means to illuminate a poster for a Sam Shepard play called Icarus' Mother - it was of a very young New York boy holding a toy hand grenade in a threatening way during play in Central Park - once seen never forgotten.Nor will I forget her self portrait, naked pregnant, in this latest volume. So much. So much. This is the volume Arbus lovers have been waiting for. Printed in Germany, beautifully bound, positively packed with images, diary entries, extracts from letters, comment. A bargain.
It's everything they say it is. Many beautiful photos that were not in the Aperture monograph, an embarrassment of riches for Arbus fans. Beautifully printed in Germany. Reminiscent of the Taschen Complete Van Gogh, which includes about 100 paintings I had never seen.Arbus was a complete original, beholden to no other photographer. Additionally, she led a life of reckless daring. "I have never refused sex to anyone who asked me."Her suicide at 48 did not come as much of a shock to those who knew her. Hepatitus and advancing age, plus manic-depression, gave her little choice but to end her life. The rumor was thet she set up a camera looking down into her bathtub so she could get pictures of her own death, but no camera was found at the scene. So many of her pictures are immortal: "Young Man in Curlers," "Boy with grenade in Central Part," "Transvestite at her birthday party." The final series of pictures of retarded people disturbed Arbus greatly and may have hastened her suicide. The picture of the retarded people in Halloween costumes, the blind leading the blind, is unforgettable.Unfortunately, no matter how much you love her work, there is a curious oscillation between crude satire (the masked Jewish man, the Jewish King and Queen sitting on their throne) and the truly monumental photos of human faces (Couple in Central Park, Puerto Rican Woman NYC, Child Crying) that is not accidental, but truly a part of her vision. You can't get away from the crude satire. Every ten pages or so, there it is again. And it is Arbus, just as much as "Young Man in Curlers."Worth every penny, not to be missed.
gave as present.
I have always found Diane Arbus photographs fascinating. It is her work I am interested in, not her persona or her life. I thought this $70.00 (new) book was her pictures and some of it is. Maybe 1/4 is full page pictures you can really look at but the rest is (quite) small pictures and her biography. Not what I wanted and not what I thought I was buying. Still, what photographs that are there are very fine. Big, heavy good paper book, excellent picture reproduction, when they are big enough to see. I have no idea why they thought it was a good idea to add contact sheets, really can't see anything in them.
Its a wonderful book. Good content and great print (you can feel the texture of the photos!). Graphic design is very beautiful, well illustrated and texts let us more close of Diana's work. I believe that this book leads us to have an understanding of the importance of the work of Diana Arbus, and also make us to FEEL something special when we go page by page.
