The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure, by William Goldman

William Goldman's modern fantasy classic is a simple, exceptional story about quests—for riches, revenge, power, and, of course, true love—that's thrilling and timeless. Anyone who lived through the 1980s may find it impossible—inconceivable, even—to equate The Princess Bride with anything other than the sweet, celluloid romance of Westley and Buttercup, but the film is only a fraction of the ingenious storytelling you'll find in these pages. Rich in character and satire, the novel is set in 1941 and framed cleverly as an “abridged” retelling of a centuries-old tale set in the fabled country of Florin that's home to “Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions.”

Please know that I love this story, I love this book, and I love the movie. To me deserves 5 stars. But this particular ebook edition has an editing error and I don't know where else to report it. There's at least a paragraph of text missing on page 194. It's the part of the book where the "editor" of the good parts version interjects to explain that he wrote a reconciliation scene between the lovers because there is no such scene in the unedited original. A significant portion of that explanation is missing from my copy of the ebook. The missing segment occurs mid paragraph too, which makes for an abrupt and incoherent shift. Here's a transcript of where the problem is:"This is me, and I'm not trying to be confusing, but the above paragraph that I'm cutting into now is verbatim Morgenstern; he was continually referring to his wife in the unabridged book, saying that she [THIS IS WHERE THE MISSING TEXT SHOULD BE] he was with a generous publishing house (they all stink--sorry about that, Mr. Jovanovich), so let me just add here..."I'd appreciate it if someone from Amazon would contact the publisher about this issue so that they can reinsert the missing text and send correct copies to everyone who buys this ebook. If this happens, then I'll update this review and change the star rating to 5, which is the rating that this story truly deserves.

I've grown up watching the movie roughly 396 times a year and will always deem it as my all-time most favorite movie ever. So naturally, when I found out that the movie was actually based on a novel, I had to have it. My biggest fear was that it would be a watered down version of the movie with less humor and wit, or that the movie took the best parts and the book would be mostly unsatisfying filler with the occasional recognizable humor. I couldn't have been more wrong.I daresay the book has even more humor and more wit than the film adaptation. William Goldman's story telling is pure genius, writing from a satirical 1st person perspective of how he created an abridged version of an old non-fictional book from a fictional country written by a fictional author. As you read through the "abridged version" you will frequently stumble across familiar lines you've come to love from the film ("INCONCEIVABLE!") but with slight variations in certain parts (ex. a more detailed story of how Wesley and Buttercup fall in love on the farm), and often times even more brilliant substance added to classic scenes you already love (Prince Humperdink's Zoo of Death). You also gain a better understanding of the film and why certain scenes play out the way that they do, such as why Inigo drunkenly yells out to Vizzini that he's going "back to the beginning" and the backstories to both Inigo and Fezzik beginning from childhood. After reading the book you'll have a newfound appreciation for the movie which you'll see is a fantastic adaptation, and you'll have a fantastic time wrapped around Goldman's hilarious finger as he guides you through a truly wonderful story that feels exactly like the timeless classic we've enjoyed watching for years. If you've never seen the movies, you'll like the book. If you've seen the movie a million times like I have, you'll LOVE the book. It's truly a must have for every Princess Bride fan. You won't be disappointed.

I've been trying to get a quality, and attractive, hardcover version of this book for years. I've simply always been a day late and a dollar short. For once that worked in my favor. This is, by far, the nicest version of the book I've ever seen. No cheap anniversary text on the cover, like the 25th Anniversary Edition. Much more attractive than the foolishly short run of the Eastman (I believe) edition. I just missed that one and it shot up in price, nonsensically. A blessing in disguise. This one is far superior. It's a nice, larger, book, with good size text and nicely spaced. The brown color of the book, with the gold accents really go well together. Add the rough cut of the page edges and it really comes across as an old fashioned classic. The illustrations are done nicely as well. I don't know if they could have done anything better. If you're looking for a beautiful, classic looking edition of the book that is a good size to read and will look great on your bookshelf, this is the one. I tip my hat to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

This is a beautiful edition of this book. The Princess Bride is Easily one of my favorite books. A number of years ago I discovered it was a book, I had honestly just thought it was a movie. I received the book for Christmas and has finished it by December 27th. If you're a fan of the movie and are feeling skeptical, fear not. The book and the movie were both written by William Goldman and, I woukd say, are equally enjoyable. The book had me laughing, in tears, and on the edge of my seat. I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story. It's action packed, romantic, funny; really I could ask for no more. Now, this specific copy I purchased as a gift for my brother, who is also a dedicated fan, and he loves it! The book really is beautiful and it has wonderful illustrations. It made an excellent gift. Worth every penny. I will try to get it from him to add photos at a later time.
