This book is not bad. It would be a great supplement to the class. It has nice projects. However a lot of the details a new woodworker who does not have someone to learn from are missing. For example, in one section it's titled 'know your glues.' The author gives limited detail on yellow glue, but only mentions in brief the other types of glues in a matter that only leaves the novice hanging on how to identify a good white, yellow, epoxy, or many of the other types of glue. In another section the author talks about using power tools and things he would recommend, but not the details. For example a router is a great tool for finishing edges and cutting datos,' but the author doesn't help you decide which type of router would best fit ANY type of woodworker. For example something like 'the cabinet maker will have something like these 3 routers, while the hobbyist should start with X router.' Again, the very important details for the novice are left out-- and this book is for novices. Also I like the recommended progressions presented, but it really isn't that helpful in this case. If it was 1993 and we didn't have endless resources at our finger tips on the internet for projects, I could see how this could be more useful. Also from my novice perspective, the project is the source of creativity and interest. if it's already set for me then I lose the desire. More useful than having 30 pages of plans on end table construction would be specific joints and construction method's used for all types of cabinet building, including the specifics on how to execute them, along with tips from the pro. This book along will not help you get started in woodworking. Mark Spagnuolo's book Hybrid Woodworking is much better at guiding the Novice through the sea of expensive tools and techniques for the beginner and has plenty of information on advanced woodworking. There is a slight shift in philosophy towards power tools from Peter Korn, but only slight. And those small differences can easily be found on the internet if you desire to lean more towards the hand tool methods. I would also recommend Terrie Noll's Joint Book: The Complete guide to Wood Jointery as a benchtop resource for helping remember the joints and methods for fine woodworking.
The content seems fine, but the Kindle edition is a mess, with many repeated sections of text. Get the print edition instead.
Woodworking Basics gives good coverage of fundamental woodworking concepts. It gives descriptions of a range of woodworking skills and then describes some basic skills. It then describes three projects: making a straight and square board, making a small bench, and making a cabinet. I particularly liked how the book was laid out, with attractive and useful pictures.I thought the book is limited as a guide for beginners. It frequently uses a lot of technical terms which would be unfamiliar to a beginner without explanation. These concepts could be illustrated and explained much better. The book could also be far more comprehensive. This book would work really well if you want to follow it through and make the projects, or as a supplement to other woodworking books. However, there are more encyclopedic woodwork books available, notably The Complete Manual of Woodworking by Albert Jackson and David Day.
If this was the textbook for Peter Korn's woodworking class, it would be just fine. The "absolute beginners" he refers to in the Introduction could ask questions and have the benefit of his shop full of equipment. They could receive hands-on instruction and critique in the delicate use of chisels and scrapers. As a standalone reference, it is useful mainly in identifying the thousands of dollars' worth of equipment you will need to get your shop up and running. My chief (and really only) complaint--and I should have paid closer attention to the reviews and the tagline--is that this is an "integrated approach" geared toward woodworkers who already have a full shop of power tools and want to move into working by hand. For the occasional DIYer like myself with limited work space, it's really not an appropriate reference.
A great starter book for anyone looking to get into woodworking. It is a very rewarding craft and can even lead to some money if you are willing to put the time in. This book goes over everything you should need to know starting out about woodworking in an easy to understand and organised manner. Would make a great gift for someone who is interested in DIY projects or someone looking for a hobby.
Informative but, you are expected to have some very expensive equipment such as a jointer and a planer. This book is designed for the beginner cabinet maker. This book reads well though. The only plans in the book are milling boards square and a couple of joints.
The book is designed for beginners and covers the basic principles of getting started in the craft. On the one hand, it seemed very basic and simplistic in choices of projects, but on the other hand that is what a novice needs. I am sure this is redundant for experienced woodworkers, but it appears that Korn has tried to codify what I assume he teaches in his renown workshops, so that the rest of us who can't make it to his Maine craftsmanship school can benefit from the lessons of his beginner's class. Are there other basic woodworking books as good or better out there? Probably. Is this one a great book for beginners? Absolutely!
I loaned this book out to a friend, as they were interested in getting into woodworking. Needless to say, I never got the book back and really wanted to keep this in my arsenal. Has just about everything you want to know to get started - especially for someone like me. It goes into details and has a lot of good reference images - perfect for me as I'm a visual learner.Talks about Wood characteristics, shaping, tools and gives some projects.
